UNIKA Project - Strengthening Transparency and Accountability in the Malawi Extractive Sector

UNIKA seeks to strengthen the capacity of Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) across Malawi to participate in the mining governance oversight.

UNIKA Project - Strengthening Transparency and Accountability in the Malawi Extractive Sector is a two years’ project (2022 to 2024) at a total budget of 70,000 USD being funded by the Southern Africa Trust. The Centre for Environmental Policy and Advocacy (CEPA) through the Publish What You Pay (PWYP) coalition and Multi Stakeholder Group (MSG) members under the Malawi Natural Resources Justice Network (NRJN), is implementing UNIKA project as one approach to fill an existing gap in the governance of the mining sector by ensuring that stakeholders and communities are knowledgeable and remain vibrant in the Malawi Extractive Industry Transparency Initiative (MWEITI) and mining processes.

The goal is to strengthen the capacity of Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) across the country to participate in the mining governance oversight.

Objectives and strategies include:
  • Build and enhance the capacity of CSOs in mining governance in Malawi
  • Increase knowledge of communities on mine development processes
  • Raise national awareness on MWEITI
  • Advocate for increased stakeholder involvement in the implementation on MWEITI Action plan.
